Communication: Hieroglyphics

Definition: Hieroglyphics were a system of writing used by the Ancient Egyptians, using a combination of logographic, syllabic and alphabetic elements.

Origins: It is believed that the Ancient Sumerians were the first to use them as their written language. They started using them in 3100 BC, 100 years before the Ancient Egyptians started using them.

Sumerian hieroglyphics (Cuneiform writing):

The Sumerians were one of the earliest urban societies to emerge in the world, in Southern Mesopotamia more than 5000 years ago. They developed a writing system whose wedge-shaped strokes would influence the style of scripts in the same geographical area for the next 3000 years.

Egyptian Hieroglyphics:

Egyptian Hieroglyphics were a formal writing system used by the Ancient Egyptians that contained a combination of logographic and alphabetic elements. Egyptians used cursive hieroglyphics for religious literature on papyrus and wood. They were also used in the pharaoh's tomb to describe his life.

Advantages: Hieroglyphics have the same advantages of the other types of writing, they are a good way of communicating because you can write almost everywhere and that's good.

Disadvantages: When hieroglyphics were mostly used (Ancient Era), only the king, pharaoh, etc. and the priests knew how to read, so hieroglyphics weren't understood by everyone.
